Position Summary

The Art and Nature Activity Specialist works alongside the Activities Team and will work to further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of Art and Nature programs that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper's age and abilities. The specialist will also support the physical operation of the camp's program facilities and equipment.

Lakota Overnight Camp

Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Deliver an Art and Nature program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
    • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff.
    • Deliver progressive and varied activities that use resources efficiently.
    • Evaluate the success of the activity.
    • Create a fun and calm environment for campers.
    • Plan a detailed schedule to meet the creative needs of each unit and program
  2. Ensure camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
    • Ensure campers and staff follow safety policies and procedures set by GSGLA.
    • Assist counselors with the development of activity kits for use by units and for special events.
  3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in activity area.
    • Ensure that program areas are free of hazards and debris.
    • Ensure that equipment and supplies are secure.
    • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  4. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  5. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
    • Prepare and attend daily meetings.
    • Assist where needed on camper arrival and departure days.
    • Act as a village liaison. Provide check-in and check-out support, conduct daily visits to villages and provide outstanding customer service to families.
    • Engaging with campers during mealtimes.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must be 18 years of age or older as of June 15, 2025, and must have graduated high school.
  • Current experience with Art and Nature
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.
  • Documented experience in teaching and facilitating activities to children relating to area of specialty.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position's employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Must be committed to working the entire camp season and attend pre-camp training.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Must be able to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
  • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and able to work flexible hours.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience
  • Documented experience teaching or interacting in youth programming.
GSGLA Employee Requirements
  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
