Job Description

Overview :

The Assistant Sports Dietitian is responsible for providing comprehensive sports nutrition-related care and education to the student athletes of a diverse campus community. The primary responsibility is to provide sports nutrition services including coaching on performance nutrition, individual assessment and counseling for medical nutrition therapy, and team education for all varsity athletes and mens club Rugby under the direction and guidance of the Clinical Sports Dietitian in conjunction with the Director of Performance and the Director of Athletic Medicine.

The Assistant Sports Dietitian will work closely with the Clinical Sports Dietitian, Performance Coaches, Team Physicians, and Athletic Trainers to meet the needs of and provide an exceptional experience to the student athletes.

The Assistant Sports Dietitian may be asked to provide expertise and input to the campus community. They will also work collaboratively with campus partners, including the Wellness Dietitian - Campus Dining, to provide appropriate and comprehensive guidance and resources to all student-athletes.

Responsibilities :

Sports Nutrition-related Clinical Care (45%)

  • Provides clinical and educational sports nutrition services to support the optimal performance and health of the student-athletes and athletic teams.
  • Provides medical nutrition therapy and counsels athletes on dietary management of nutrition-related medical concerns, including diabetes, IBS, food allergies, celiac disease, etc., when necessary.
  • Works with team physicians, athletic medicine staff (Clinical Sport Dietitian, Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, support staff), athletics staff (Performance Coach, Sport Coach, support staff, administration) related to nutritional needs for all varsity student-athletes and Mens club rugby.
  • Assists with research and potential procurement of sport nutrition products purchased by Athletics to ensure safety, legality, and efficacy of products provided to student-athletes.
  • Collaborates with eating concerns team and provides eating disorders care support for athletes in treatment, in conjunction with Clinical Sports Dietitian, as needed, and prevention services for athletes at risk.
  • Assists in weight management policies and weight certification programs, including assisting the Clinical Sports Dietitian with direct collaboration between UHS and Athletics staff, for all weight class sports (lightweight rowing and wrestling).
  • Competent in assisting and/or leading body composition analysis and proper collection of data points, and interpreting data to convey to student-athletes in an appropriate and compassionate manner, as necessary.
  • Assists Clinical Sports Dietitian with the Director of Performance to oversee testing, procedures, and policies related to body composition assessment and data.
  • Assists with managing current and future departmental fueling stations including but not limited to, managing budget, hiring student-workers/fellows/dietetic interns, and establishing protocols/policies for safety and effectiveness of athletic fueling initiatives.

Outreach & Education (45%)

  • Assists in providing sports nutrition education and outreach to 38 varsity teams and Mens Club Rugby including team talks, trainings, and/or in-services on nutrition for performance, travel nutrition, and meal planning.
  • Assists in supplement safety in sport for athletic medicine and staff with Athletics Compliance office.
  • Is responsible for sports nutrition related web-content, Teamworks/Teambuilder educations, and social media accounts.
  • Assists with sports nutrition-related education materials used by Athletic Medicine/Athletics Department.
  • Provides nutrition education to student athletes and athletic staff through social media, fueling station table events, dining hall tours, and group programming.

Administrative Duties (10%)

  • Authors, edits, and maintains sports nutrition-related policies and protocols. Partners with appropriate internal and external departments in crafting evidenced based policies.
  • Assists Clinical Sports Dietitian to identify, review, and prioritize opportunities to improve organization efficiency and effectiveness through technology and automation.
  • Develops and maintains the nutrition templates in the EMR with communication, efficiency, data use, and outcome evaluations at the forefront.
  • Assist with overall operating budget for sports nutrition services.
  • Assists in determining capital budget needs based on equipment condition, system design, and market developments to ensure necessary resources for provision of high-quality sports nutrition services/resources.

Qualifications :

Essential Qualifications

1+ years exeperience and a Bachelors degree in clinical nutrition, food and nutrition, or related area, granted from a US regionally accredited college or university.

Completion of a coordinated and/or didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.

Active registration on the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice.

1 year of clinical skills with previous sports nutrition and/or eating disorder experience.

Strong interest in working with sports nutrition, eating disorders, and obtaining hours for CSSD (Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics).

Proven experience with self-directed, forge partnerships, and collaborate across discipline

Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
1-2 years clinical outpatient experience delivering individual nutritional care for: disordered eating, weight management, diabetes, lipid disorders, food allergies, and gastrointestinal issues/diseases.

1-2 years sports dietetics experience in the collegiate and or/professional setting.

CSSD (Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics).

Training in health equity and other diversity and inclusion topics.

Familiarity with total work systems (such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and Baldrige National Quality Program); and reviewing and analyzing data.
